Waiakea senior Alyssa Ferreira and Hilo freshman Sydnee Yokota put on a nice long-distance shooting show on Friday night, each sinking three 3-pointers.

However, Ferreira had more help and the Warriors thumped the Vikings 49-27 in a Big Island Interscholastic Federation Division I girls basketball game Friday night at Hilo Armory.

Ferreira, who was 3 of 3 from 3-point territory, finished with 13 points, Sefulu Faavae added 10 and Ciera Pacheco had eight to lead the Warriors (2-0).

Yokota came off the bench and scored 11 points, and Aliyah Pana had 10 to lead the Vikings (0-2).

The game mostly boiled down to a halfcourt battle, with few transition baskets for either side. And when Ferreira had an open look, she fired away, hitting her first two 3-point attempts in a 10-0 Waiakea run.

In the first half, the Warriors were hot from long distance, going 6 of 10. Tricia Amuimuia also added a pair of 3-pointers to push the visitors to a 25-11 halftime cushion. They finished 7 of 17 from long distance; Hilo went 4 of 11.

Faavae twice scored in transition and other times on sharp cuts to the basket, offering defenders a dilemma to hedge on her or get out on the shooters.

While Ferreira was efficient with her shooting, most of her teammates were not, missing a lot of close-range shots — layups, point-blank putbacks and other gimme baskets. Still, the Warriors were good for 38 percent (18 of 47) shooting.

But for the most part, aside from Ferreira and Faavae’s offensive contributions, it was defense that did the job. Waiakea’s pressure handcuffed the young Viks, who have a nucleus of freshmen and sophomores, to just 19.5 percent (8 of 41) shooting for the game.

Yokota converted a pair of free throws with two minutes left in the first quarter to erase the scoring drought. Then Pana got her team’s only transition basket on the night, and she later hit one of two free throws for a 5-0 mini-scoring run.

The Vikings never scored back-to-back baskets again, until the fourth period when Alyssa Perreira made one of two free throws and Yokota nailed her final 3-pointer with under a minute remaining.

At the start of the fourth quarter, Ferreira drilled her third 3-pointer and two minutes later Waiakea’s bench players made an appearance. Freshman Nicole Antonio had a layup with 1:42 left to cap the Warriors’ scoring.

In the junior-varsity game, it was Hilo 49, Waiakea 44.

Waiakea 11 14 14 10 — 49

Hilo 8 3 8 8 — 27

Pahoa 52, Keaau 51, 2OT: Randi Berinobis scored 20 points and Ranchell Berinobis added 12 as the host Daggers evened their record at 1-1 by winning a double-overtime thriller.

Randi Estrada led the Cougars (1-1) with 25 points and Maedina Ongais-Kilaulani had 11.

Michelle LaGuardia added 10 points for Pahoa.

Keaau 6 14 5 17 4 5 — 51

Pahoa 8 9 17 8 4 6 — 52

Kamehameha 60, Ka’u 23: At Pahala scored Chelsea Poe scored 18 points and Casey Poe had 12 to lead the Warriors (2-0).

Joyce Ibasan and Taylor Pocock scored six points each to lead the Trojans (0-2).

Kamehameha 20 16 16 8 — 60

Ka’u 11 4 4 4 — 23

Hawaii Prep 62, Kealakehe 27: Leahi Lindsey led the visitors from Hawaii Prep with 17 points.

Chancis Fernandez added 15 points, and Eliyah Fernandez scored 10 as the Ka Makani improved to 1-1.

Anna Desagun led Kealakehe (0-2) with 18 points.

Hawaii Prep won the JV game 49-13.
